Julien Hipeau
Since 2018, Julien Hipeau has been exploring sculpture, beginning with clay busts after training at the Art Academy in London. Working from his garden atelier, he brings to life marine and terrestrial creatures inspired by imagination and art. Without access to a kiln, he mastered mould-making techniques and casts his creations in plaster and resin.
His journey then led him to wood - a living material he sculpts to reveal its natural textures and character. Each piece begins with a full-scale drawing and a clay study before being shaped with precision using hand tools, then finished with fire to enhance the wood’s unique grain.
Julien’s artistic world is rich with expressive animal sculptures in clay and wood, each telling a story and evoking emotion. Custom commissions hold a special place in his practice, allowing him to create unique pieces that resonate deeply with the sensitivities and stories of his clients.

This sculpture was created as a prototype for a commissioned, larger-scale wooden piece. The original was sculpted in clay, a mould was created and it was then cast in Jesmonite, a sustainable resin chosen for its durability and fine detail. The work is inspired by the French artist E. Aubry.
